On July 22nd, Ji Yong Ho and Lee Hwan Kwon are opening their “In Between Imagination and Reality” exhibition in Hong Kong Time Square. Time Square Ltd. is devoted to support art by organizing art exhibitions and art education programs for local residents and tourists. Currently, this exhibition is receiving a great amount of attention and support in Hong Kong as the artists are contributing to the overall growth and expansion of Korean sculptures to foreign countries.
Ji Yong Ho will exhibit a total of 11 pieces including his recent four large sculptures, “Bear 1”, “Rhinoceros 1”, “Lion 4”, and “Horse 4”. With his main use of tires that are considered to be problematic industrial waste in today’s society, his animal sculptures become “Mutants” that are reborn in abnormal forms and transformed through synthetic variations. His works also mirror the controversial issues of cloning and genetically modified organisms.
Yi Hwan Kwon will exhibit a total of 5 pieces, including his recent cinema series, “Trinity” and “Leon and Matilda”, as well as “Jangdokdae”, “A Windy Day”, and “The Man Who Is Gazing at the Distance”. His distorted, stretched out sculptures are a restoration of his imagination as a child through watching enlarged images on television and movie screens. Although his subjects are representations of the common man, his subjects are recreated through distortion. This effect simultaneously creates an ambivalent sense of familiarity and shock.
The exhibition, “In Between Imagination and Reality”, gives rise to a new and fresh perspective in Korean sculptures.
